Class Policies

• Payment is required when signing up for a class. We can not reserve a space without payment.

• Payment is made directly to the instructor in the form of check or cash. We can not accept credit cards.

• Your purchase of supplies from Prairie Queens allows us to keep our classroom available for classes. We encourage you to purchase these items here and we will give you 10% discount on supplies, fabrics, notions and patterns (excluding any clearance fabric).

• For the courtesy of other students, please put your cell phone on vibrate and take any calls outside.

• All teachers, students and customers need to park in the front of our store. Rear parking is for employees only. Cars will be towed.

• Prairie Queens has a limited supply of cutting mats and rulers in the classroom. To ensure that your time in class is used efficiently, bring your own cutting supplies.

• We appreciate your business and understand you may want to set up early, but please do not disrupt the classroom during another class.

• If your class begins at 10:00 A.M., we will happily let students in 5 minutes prior to the store opening.

• Cancellation Policy: It is up to the discretion of the teachers to refund class money for students who cancel within 7 days of the class starting.

• Finally, in order to facilitate a good class experience, we ask that students do not bring children, pets or any unpaid guests.

OPEN SEWING
Join any of our available open sew groups: Every other Tuesday evenings with Eli from 6:30 - 9:30; Wednesday evenings with Annette from 6:00 - 9:30 pm; Wednesday evenings once a month and Thursdays with Keiko from 10:00 - 3:00 pm, and Fridays with Mary from 10:00 - 3:00 pm. ALTERED JOURNAL
Transform an inexpensive composition notebook by using fabric, paper and paint into a unique treasure. In this class, we will learn how to collage paper and fabric together; use stencils, stamps and paint to embellish the notebook's cover. This is a fun project and a great way to create inexpensive gift items for your friends and family. Don't be surprised if they show up displayed on that special someone's coffee table.

In this new beginning class, the students will learn how to make a quilt from the very beginning, including learning about fabric, using rotary tools and basic supplies, and then sewing while learning basic piecing techniques. The students will end the course with a finished sampler and a new skillset that will allow them to move on to more advanced quilt making. This course will be centered on the book Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!!: The Complete Guide to Quiltmaking by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes. This book is considered the bible for quilt making.

BATIKS IN MOTION
This is one of those dramatic quilts that look so difficult to make but it truly isn't. We have taught this curved block to hundreds of women and no one has failed in learning our method. It's a way of sewing curves that once you learn, you will never be afraid of making any other curved block. You'll have fun twisting and turning these blocks to create your own design without having to match seams. The key is using a variety of values and print scales to provide contrast in each block. This quilt is a "show stopper"! The pattern is included in the class fee.

BEGINNING MACHINE APPLIQUE
In this class you will review your basic piecing skills by making a small quilt and then learn the basics for machine applique. This is a two-part class and you will learn the various techniques for applique as well as some cool tips!

BEGINNING QUILTING
Beginning Quilting is an introduction class to the art of quilting.  The six week class for a lap size quilt explores techniques including: accurate measuring and cutting; establishing an accurate 1/4" seam; chain piecing; matching points and seams; tricks to mastering half-square triangles; machine and hand applique; fussy cutting; paper piecing; adding sashing to blocks to make a quilt top; preparing a quilt for quilting; Stitch In The Ditch quilting; making continuous binding; attaching binding; mitering corners of binding; labels; sleeves for display.

BEGINNING RIBBON EMBROIDERY
Learn 7 basic stitches that will form the foundation for both floss and ribbon embroidery. Using these basic stitches you will build a design that looks complex but is simple to stitch. In this class we will concentrate on the elements of design and how to compose a flower garden format. Applying the 7 basic stitches, you will use silk ribbon, floss and beads to embroider your flower garden design. You will gain the confidence and skill to create and work your own designs.

BETH'S OPEN WOOL WORKSHOP
Felted Wool Applique Workshop is open to anyone who wants to finish wool appliqué projects, get help with an existing project or start a new project. This is an ongoing workshop and is open to all levels.

BINDING 101
Want to learn the secrets of beautiful straightedge binding? Ever wonder how people make those perfectly mitered corners? Well, this is the class for you!!! By the end of the class you'll know everything you need to complete quilts with beautiful straightedge bindings, including techniques for mitered corners and what looks like seamless binding. The included kit will provide you with the fabric you'll need for this class.

BIRDSONG
This wall-sized, blended quilt (designed by Penny as a teaching piece) is the perfect project for Spring. In addition to learning enhanced techniques for perfect triangle piecing, the class will also focus on fabric selection. Value, scale, and other aspects of fabric "blending" will be explored in depth to allow the student to gain new understanding that can be carried over to future projects.

"THE BIG EZ"
If you love large prints of any kind (florals, plaids, paisleys, geometric, etc.), The Big EZ was designed for you. Pick your favorite prints or collections and have some fun with this easy-to-make pattern with striking results. Can't you just picture those large Asian lady prints with a variety of Asian prints? This will become a favorite of yours as it's quick and pleasing.

BOSTON BAKSETS
This class is perfect for a beginner who wants to expand their skills beyond strip sewing. In this class, students will be topstitching a bias strip, making triangle corners and refining their piecing skills.

CARPENTER'S SQUARE
This very traditional Carpenter's Square gives the appearance of strips of fabric weaving in and out in the blocks. When looking closely at the design, you will see two different blocks. These combine to create a classic two color quilt. Ours uses a print and a solid, but two solids would work as well. Directional fabrics do not work in this quilt.

CATHEDRAL WINDOWS
If you know the traditional way to make the cathedral window quilt, you will be surprised how much easier this method is!  It's not as difficult as it looks.  Join Keiko for one day technique class to learn how to make beautiful cathedral window blocks in easier way!  Make any size you want!  With this easy method, you can almost make any size without calculation.  You have an option to choose hand or machine appliqué the curved window pane.  Construction of the base units need to be sewn by machine, but don't worry, if you can sew four patches, you can do it!!!

COILED FABRIC BOWLS/BAKSETS/PLACEMATS AND MORE
Learn the techniques to making coiled fabric baskets, bowls, plates, place mats, tote bags, bracelets even! In this class we will cover the how-to's of shaping, finishing and embellishing. The goal is to complete a bread basket during the workshop. (This always depends on how much socializing the attendees do.) Fair warning though: This is addictive!

THE DECONSTRUCTED NINE-PATCH WITH A TWIST!

DENIM JACKET EMBELLISHMENT CLASS
Using fabric, gimp, and/ or various other fibers, you will create a unique design on your denim jacket. The skills that we will develop are fabric collage, free form application of gimp and composition skills. Your objective is to embellish your denim jacket and enhancing your sewing skills. You can use an old jacket from you closet or pick up one at a thrift store. When you are done with it, you will have a one of a kind garment and a process that you can apply to other garments.
Level: You need to know how to use a sewing machine and do some simple hand sewing. If you can make a quilt, you can embellish a denim jacket.

DIAMOND JUBILEE II
Easy quick-cutting and strip-piecing techniques are used to make this stunning diamond quilt. No y-seams are required!!! This quilt looks great in all types of fabrics and colors. Using scraps is very effective as well. The hard part is choosing what fabrics to use!

FABRIC PAINTING
This is a process class in which to learn how to add color and surface texture to your fabric by using the Jones Tones Craft Paint product and Jacquard Fabric paint. Jones Tones Craft Paint is heat cured to hold your dimensional pattern and requires painting with fabric paints to add color. The expanded paint is soft and easy to needle by hand or machine. Use these techniques in your fiber art and quilt embellishment projects. You may also use your painted fabric in Suellene's Small Art Quilt class.

FAIRMEADOW QUILT
In this 6-month class, students will have the rare opportunity to make Jeana Kimball's famous Fairmeadow applique quilt while learning freezer-paper hand-applique with Penny. This pattern has been out-of-print for many years, but Penny has gained approval from the designer to distribute copies of this classic pattern for a nominal fee. Previous students of Penny's can choose to work on previous class projects, while new students will learn the basic applique techniques using a provided before embarking on their own Fairmeadow.

FROST ON THE FERNS CLASS IS FULL
Gentle curved vines, flowers, and a central urn make this a great project that you'll love making as much as owning. Advanced students can opt to make the larger bed-size quilt.

GIRLS NIGHT OUT

INTERMEDIATE RIBBON EMBROIDERY
This class will emphasize both concepts and skill development. The concepts considered are composition/design theory and color theory. The skill set we want to build include application of concepts learned in the Beginning Ribbon Embroidery class. Additionally we will focus on creating a variety of silk ribbon flowers. Our objective is to compose another flower garden that will be worked in primarily in silk ribbon embroidery with some floss and embellished with beads. The concepts and skills learned can be applied to any project that you want to work in the future. The simple stitches and design architecture that you are learning can be used to make compositions that look very complex but are really very simple to do.
Level:You must have completed Beginning Ribbon Embroidery with Suellene or show proficiency.

"S" QUILT WITH SCALLOPED BORDER
A great lap size quilt that adores jelly rolls!  Completion is a breeze with the precut jellyrolls made available by fabric manufacturers; regular yardage requirements are also included if needed.  This strong graphic block goes together fast, utilizing cut and press methods that speed the process.  Learn how to add a fabulous scalloped border and proper binding methods for curved edges to this quilt.

SASHIKO EMBROIDERY
This is a techniques workshop on the basics of the traditional Japanese art of sashiko embroidery. You will learn the basic “do's” and don'ts” of the sashiko running stitch and how sashiko can be used traditionally or in new ways to enhance quilts or contemporary Garments. Patterns for the Komen Wall Hanging and an Asian Market Bag are included in the class fee.

SEW SIMPLE
Learn basic sewing skills and complete a beautiful project. This class is Sew Simple, but packed with Sew much more. Each student works at their own pace and Michelle will go over instructions with you. Once you have mastered the basics, you will be ready for a Simple beginning project. See supply list for your project level. Projects include: Pillowcase, Lap quilt, Patchwork quilt, Simple short or pants, Tote bag, Stuffed animal. SMALL ART QUILT
In this process class, you will learn to use various fiber art techniques to create a small art quilt. If you have taken the Fabric painting class with Suellene, you may use that fabric to make your art quilt, or use a different fabric. We will use a simple design around which you will experiment with various fibers and found objects and beads to build your art quilt.

TILE QUILT
In this hand appliqué workshop, begin your own tile quilt with a 10 or 15" block that you will prepare and begin to stitch. The emphasis will be on how a tile quilt differs from other types of appliqué and how to get started making a tile quilt rather than on how to appliqué, although instruction and/or review of basic needle-turn hand appliqué will be included, as needed .
